Thomas David Walter

Cedar, MI – Thomas David Walter, 88, of Cedar, passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at Munson Medical Center.

Tom was born on May 17, 1934, in Suttons Bay, the son of Frederick and Evelyn (Schaub) Walter into a large family of ten siblings. Tom was married to Emily Gauthier bringing their 4 children into this world. After their separation, he met the love of his life, Linda Brzezinski, and they spent the last 52 years together. Linda’s daughter became Tom’s 5th child and created a beautiful, blended family together.

Tom honed his skills in welding that he learned at a young age for the US Army in the Korean War where he made modifications to transportation vehicles. Afterward, he returned to Suttons Bay to pursue a career in welding. One of Tom’s favorite projects was when he worked on the roofless vehicles that were used for dune climbs in Leelanau County back in the day.

He also enjoyed gardening, hunting, wood, metalworking, tending to his animals, and spending time with his loved ones. His favorite plants to tend were tomatoes and small cucumbers to pickle. He loved to share his harvests with friends and family. You would often see his small tomato stand on the side of the road selling his prized tomatoes, “25 cents each or 3 for a dollar: if you need the money, take it, it’s free. If you don’t, leave it.”

Among the many things that Tom will be remembered for includes his unique sense of humor as he shared stories from his childhood and joked with everyone he encountered. He was a ray of sunshine with quick remarks that would make anyone laugh. He was the telemarketer’s worst nightmare as he would play along until they hung up on him for being silly.

Tom is survived by his partner, Linda; his five children, Jeff (Cathy) Walter, Greg (Annette) Walter, Mike Walter, Michelle Walter, and Lisa (Philip) Garno; Five grandchildren, Jason Walter, Andre Walter, Ashley (Hannah) Zeits, Gunner Walter, and Katelyn Zeits; and one great-grandchild, Jacoby Walter; Sibling, Pat Forton, and many nieces and nephews.

Per Tom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and an open house will be held at Tom and Linda’s house, Sunday, May 21st from 1-4 pm. For more information, please visit RememberingTomDWalter.com.
